Profiling the risk that
Asian women inherit to
breast cancer
Together with University
Malaya, we have
assembled the
largest collection of
samples in Malaysia to date, with blood samples from
over 700 breast cancer
patients. These samples have
enabled us to study the
significance of the
different genetic profiles
of Malay, Chinese and Indian
women and its link to
disease incidence and
treatment outcome. Using
this national resource of
samples and clinical
database that we have
assembled, we will continue
to work closely with
researchers in United
Kingdom, Korea, Japan and
Singapore to determine the
role of new cancer genes in
breast cancer in Malaysians.
We can now bring our
research directly to you,
and help you test and
understand your risk profile
CARIF is working to
establish Malaysia's first
complete cancer genetic
testing clinic.
Through this clinic, we will
provide a comprehensive
service that includes risk
assessment, genetic testing
and genetic counselling to
suspected high-risk
individuals. This service
will enable people with
genetic alterations, and
their clinicians, to manage
the person’s risk by
considering the most
appropriate preventative or
treatment strategy. It will
also enable people who are
in high-risk families but do
not have alterations to
allay their fear of cancer.
