Cancer Research
Initiatives Foundation, which opened in 2001, is
the only non-profit cancer research laboratory
dedicated to Malaysian cancer research. Over the
years, our scientists, in collaboration with
researchers both locally and worldwide, have
achieved advances in the understanding of
cancers, with a particular emphasis on cancers
which are prevalent locally and regionally and
using resources available from Malaysia’s
biodiversity.
CARIF is committed to developing a workforce of

(a)
Postdoctoral Scientist/Research Associate in
Nasopharyngeal Cancer Resarch Group to work
with a team studying the molecular pathogenesis
of nasopharyngeal cancer (NPC). CARIF is part of
a national effort to establish the Malaysian NPC
Study Group and we completed the first study in
Malaysia to investigate the molecular basis of
NPC using genome-wide expression microarrays.
You will be involved in a project to determine
the potential values of previously identified
candidate genes in prognosis, predisposition and
treatment of NPC patients. You will have the
opportunity to explore the use of advanced
technologies such as next generation sequencing.
Preferably, you should have a PhD in cancer
research, but we will also consider applicants
with a MSc with at least 2 years research
experience in relevant field. You will report
directly to the Nasopharyngeal Cancer group
leader. You will be responsible for managing
your own research projects and also have duties
to ensure the smooth-running of the group. The
post offers an excellent prospect on career
development in cancer research through in-house
and external training. You will also have the
opportunity to take on leadership roles within
the group and to interact with scientists in
other institutions locally and internationally.

Research Associate in Oral Cancer Resarch Group
to work with a team studying the molecular

underlying oral cancer development and we
completed the first study in Malaysia to
investigate the molecular basis of oral cancer
using genome-wide expression microarrays.
You will be involved in a project to determine

oral cancer patients. You will have the
opportunity to be part of an interactive team to
address clinically relevant questions. You
should have a BSc or MSc in the relevant field.
You will report directly to the Oral Cancer
group leader. You will be responsible for
managing your own research projects and also
have duties to ensure the smooth-running of the

(c) Laboratory
Manager to provide laboratory management
support to ensure the smooth running of the
laboratory. You will assist the Group Leaders to
plan, monitor and maintain budgetary
requirements for consumables and capital
expenditure. You will also be responsible for
the maintenance and servicing of laboratory
equipment and the facility itself. There will be
opportunities to learn about current research
technologies, new techniques, and product
developments. You will act as the Laboratory
Safety Officer where appropriate and organize
safety training and records.
You should have a MSc/ BSc or equivalent in a
biological or medical area and should have
experience of working in a laboratory
environment, and in the principles of laboratory
research. You should also have effective
organization and interpersonal skills for
working in a team environment and with the
capacity of acting on own initiative.

(d) Development
Executive / Manager to work with a team
involved in building and supporting donor
relations and managing communications with all
stakeholders, including donors, collaborators
and the general public.
You will work directly with the CEO and Board of
Trustees to lead our fundraising and marketing
activity for Malaysian cancer research. This
includes organising fundraising activities,
working with partners in other fundraising
activities including the Terry Fox Run and the
Estee Lauder Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign,
and developing print and web-based communication
with our stakeholders (donors, collaborators and
general public). In addition, you will have the
opportunity to bring out the best in people, by
organizing volunteer-led activities and building
relationships with our volunteers, enabling them
to use their time and skills in a fulfilling way
that makes are real difference to the charity
and ultimately to cancer patients. A
